Kathy A Murray, DVM, DACLAM

January 6, 1955 – July 20, 2023

Kathy received her veterinary degree at Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1982. She completed residency training in Laboratory Animal Medicine at the Milton S. Hersey Medical Center of Pennsylvania State University in 1984 and subsequently joined the Department of Comparative Medicine at Louisiana State University. She then joined Merck Research Laboratories in 1986. In 1986 Kathy also became a diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine and went on to serve the college in its various activities.

In 1988 she joined Charles River Laboratories as a Laboratory Animal Veterinarian and Associate Director of Professional Services with responsibilities for health care of all animals produced in North America. Her extensive knowledge and ability to develop practical solutions to problems propelled her to positions of increasing responsibility within the company ultimately encompassing both commercial production and preclinical business with an international scope of responsibilities. Kathy spent the last 12 years as Executive Director of US and then Global Preclinical Laboratory Animal Medicine. She continued to provide consulting support to Charles River beyond her retirement in June 2022.

Kathy was a mentor to many veterinarians within Charles River. She will be remembered by all she worked with in the Laboratory Animal Science and Medicine community for her great intellect, her sense of humor and her commitment to the humane care and use of animals. She was always ready and willing to share her considerable knowledge and expertise with colleagues both within Charles River and across our community. She was a leader in our field, a trusted colleague, a diplomate and a caring friend to so many. She is greatly missed by all that had the pleasure to know and work with her.
